Can I Burn?
Use the following questionnaire to determine if you can burn. If you are still not sure, please contact the department for more information.

Am I burning on the beach or shoreline?
If Yes, then you can not have a fire.
All beach fires are banned year round on Gabriola Island.

Is there a fire ban in place?
If yes, then you can not have a fire of any kind.
If no, then proceed to the next question.
Will you be burning dry, Class A material (clean wood)?
If no, then you can not have a fire.
If yes, then proceed to the next question
Is my Fire smaller than a 0.5 Meter by 0.5 Meter by 0.5 Meter (Campfire) or a 200L(55 Gallon) metal barrel?
If yes, then you may have a fire.
If no, then proceed to next question

Is my Fire bigger then a 0.5 Meter by 0.5 Meter by 05 Meter or a 200L(55 Gallon) metal barrel?
If yes, then you need a permit from GVFD.

Have I checked the vent index page and confirmed the vent index allows me to have a fire?
If yes, and you have a permit and been given to go ahead, then you can burn.
If no, then you cannot burn. Here is a link to the vent index.
Remember, when a Burn Ban is in place no open burning is allowed, whether with a permit or not.
Burn bans will be advertised on the site in the top of every page and NO FIRES signage will be visible around the island.
