When you join

When your application to join the GVFD is accepted, you become a probationary firefighter. We’ll supply you with:

  • a set of turnout gear, which is what firefighters wear when fighting structural fires.
  • a locker for your turnout gear at the fire hall
  • a mailbox of your own at the fire hall
  • the textbook we use for fire studies

After that, you come to training every Tuesday night. Every training session is different. We rotate through dozens of different topics, ranging from ladder rescue to fire attack to cutting up cars.

If you decide to stick with us, you’ll learn more and more and more. When the officers decide you’re ready to help us in real emergencies, you’ll get a pager, and will begin responding to calls.

You’ll be eligible to become a full member (off probation) when you’ve been with the department for a year or more, when you’ve completed a certain number of exams, and when you’re voted in by all of the firefighters.
