The Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department trains every Tuesday night from 7 pm to 10 pm.

Members attend some off-island training sessions as well; these are often weekend-long sessions.

Some of the things we learn and practice are:

  • structural firefighting
  • wildland firefighting
  • auto extrication (cutting apart crashed cars in order to extricate victims)
  • rope rescue (for when people fall off cliffs, etc)
  • advanced first aid
  • truck driving skills (each member attains an air brake endorsement and a class 3 license)

We train to the National Fire Protection Agency‘s 1001 standard for firefighter certification.

Most of our training occurs on Gabriola Island. All of our training is provided at no cost to members.

Sometimes photos and accounts of of our training sessions appear in our blog, so reading through the entries there can give you an idea of what we do.
