We’ve saved you money
If you own property on Gabriola Island, you’re eligible for significant savings on your insurance because the Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department has earned the Superior Tanker Shuttle Accreditation from the Fire Underwriters’ Survey of Canada.
Residential and commercial accreditation
The accreditation test involves having an examiner come to Gabriola and watch as the fire department deliver large amount of water to a fire scene within a time limit.
(The photo here shows one of our practice sessions, in which we are flowing a lot of water!)
In order to pass this test for residential properties, the fire department must be able to supply and flow 200 gallons of water for 2 hours, delivered from a water source 5 kms away.
In order to pass this test for commercial properties, the fire department must be able to supply and flow 400 gallons of water for 1 hour, delivered from a source 2 kms away..
We passed both tests!
In 2007, we passed the residential Superior Tanker Shuttle Accreditation test. We were the second fire department west of Ontario to earn this status.
In 2013, we re-qualified for the residential standard, AND we became the first volunteer fire department west of Ontario to earn the commercial rating as well.
In 2019 we once again re-qualified for both ratings.
